Midwestern Dental began operation in Michigan in 1981 and quickly became a
pioneer in the Managed Dental Care industry. Through innovated thinking,
we realized that in order to cut cost the actual dental care delivery
system needed to be managed. As a result, Midwestern made a commitment to
redesign the way dentistry was both delivered and insured.
Maximum
Preventive Care When Needed
While the preventative care philosophy was still in its infancy, MDPI
fully embraced
the idea that identifying and treating dental disease in its earliest
stages is the least expensive, most cost effective form of treatment. MDPI
also understood the need for people to receive dental care when they
needed it… not only when they could afford it. Benefit programs were
therefore designed to remove or minimize any disincentives to receiving
care such as the deductibles, copays and maximums.
Comprehensive
Benefit Levels At Reasonable Cost
MDPI
also championed the philosophy that cost could be managed effectively when
a Quality Assurance Program and a periodic Utilization Review were in
place. While other dental plans merely try to influence patient/provider
behavior patterns, MDPI is an active partner working to provide
appropriate treatment at reasonable costs. Instead of contracting with
independence dentist in the community, MDPI works exclusively with staff
model group practices. This allows MDPI to ensure that the providers
understand the importance of not over-utilizing or under-utilizing, as
well as the need to control costs, so that the patient and the employer
can still afford comprehensive benefit levels for very reasonable rates.
